Walkerton’s Clarence ‘Tubby’ Schmalz left a legacy in organized hockey across Canada

Clarence “Tubby” Schmalz was synonymous with local politics and amateur hockey on a national level. His numerous accomplishments in hockey included a tenure as president of the Ontario Hockey Association, as well as serving as the first commissioner of the Ontario Hockey League from 1974-78. He is also the namesake of the Clarence Schmalz Cup, awarded to the provincial Junior C hockey champions. He passed away suddenly on Dec. 7, 1981 at the age of 64.
