Martin takes second at OFSAA

Sacred Heart student Harley Martin wins silver in shot put after sweeping CWOSSA, BAA throwing events

FORMOSA – Harley Martin started her high school journey to the OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletics Association) track and field championships at the BAA (Bluewater Athletic Association) competition in Kincardine on May 12.

The Sacred Heart High School student swept the senior girls throwing events. Martin won the shot put with a toss of 10.63 metres. She then won the javelin throw with a 35.65 metre heave, besting the runner-up by over 10 metres. In the discus, Martin’s 31.80 metre throw beat the next-best finisher by over 10 metres once again.

The top four competitors advance at each level.

Martin travelled to Brantford for the CWOSSA (Central Western Ontario Secondary School Association) competition May 18 and 19. Again, she came in first in all three events, with a shot put toss of 11.17 metres, javelin throw of 36.74 metres and discus throw of 30.76 metres.

Martin next competed in Windsor at OFSAA West. At that event, Martin placed second in discus with a 32-metre throw and placed third in shot put with a 12-metre throw. Her 35.6 metre throw in javelin placed her fifth in that event.

The OFSAA competition saw Martin travelling to Toronto on June 3. She competed in discus, placing sixth with a 32.17 metre throw. Martin’s shot put throw of 11.81 metres saw her take second place. Congratulation Harley Martin for bringing home the OFSAA silver medal.

Martin will be heading off to the University of Windsor in the fall where she will study kinesiology and of course “throw” for the track and field team.
