WALKERTON — Sistema Walkerton has launched its inaugural session to bring free violin lessons to local students.
The program currently has 10 students and runs every Tuesday and Thursday at Walkerton District Community School. Students join the program from schools in Mildmay, Formosa, Walkerton and the home-schooling community.
“We are thrilled to get this program up and running,” said executive director Robin Zettel. “There’s something about the violin that can be so empowering for students — it’s amazing to be a part of.”
This year’s program, which had its launch delayed by the pandemic, will run until the end of the school year and pick up again in September.
“Right now we have 10 students, but we really hope to double the number of seats over the summer,” Zettel said. “There is definitely a feeling that we are at the beginning of something that has the potential to grow and be part of the community for years to come. The support for this program has been incredible — a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed.”
Sistema Walkerton is a registered non-profit run entirely by volunteers and funded through grants, sponsorships and donations. Its board of directors is made up of music professionals and educators. Zettel holds a bachelor of music performance from the University of Toronto and brings almost 20 years of teaching experience to the program.
Aside from lessons twice a week, the program also offers a light snack. Community violins are on loan for the duration of the program.
Sistema music programs exist in countries right around the world, offering free lessons to students of all ages.
