Thoughts on Easter

To the editor,

What is the first thing that comes to mind when the topic of Easter comes up? Is it cute, furry bunnies? It is beautifully decorated eggs? Is it an Easter egg hunt? Is it a special meal with family? All of these may be fun sidelines to our Eater celebrations, but they have unfortunately become the main focus of our attention.

May I suggest a change in focus? Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ died on a cruel Roman cross. His was not just another death by crucifixion. God sent Jesus to Earth as a human to show us how to live a life of purpose. God knew that we could never earn His favour by good deeds.  He allowed Jesus to die in our place, taking all our sins upon Himself. But He did not just die. He rose from the grave, and is still alive in Heaven. His grave is empty, unlike those of every other religious leader. This cannot be explained by logic, but must be accepted by faith.

Just think how much more meaningful our Easter celebrations would be if we would simply acknowledge that we can never earn a place in Heaven by good deeds (after all, who would decide how much is enough?).

The only way to secure a place in Heaven is to admit that we are sinners, ask God’s forgiveness, receive by faith the fact that Jesus paid the penalty for our sins, and ask Him to be our Saviour. John, chapter 3, verse 16, in the Bible tells us that God’s love sent Jesus to die for us so that whoever believes and trusts Him will live forever in Heaven.
