‘Clock is ticking on our heritage’

To the editor,

The clock is ticking on our heritage. Less than one week remains before it will be too late for residents to affect the sale of the Walkerton Armoury. The deadline is April 5 to submit comments to Fiona Hamilton at fhamilton@brockton.ca or by calling 519-881-2223 ext. 124.

For years now, the municipality has locked up our area history, out of sight and in several different locations. Just what is the municipality’s vision for displaying these historical items? How long before school groups can learn about the culture and heritage of our area? How long before family researchers can access the pictures and memorabilia that were donated for that purpose? Could the materials not at least be brought together in one place – at the Armoury?

A thorough inventory could be completed and items showcased during the summer months.  Yes, there is a cost, but what price can be put on our history as a community? If accessibility is an issue, install a ramp to the main floor. If two windows need to be replaced, don’t tell us that they all need to be done. Now is the time to urge council to not throw away another piece of our history.
