GODERICH – A Huron County OPP officer was assaulted and narrowly escaped serious injuries following an incident that took place in Goderich last week.
On Jan. 19 at approximately 1:15 p.m., Huron County OPP officers responded to a mini-mall parking lot located on Victoria Street North to check on the condition of a driver that was parked in the lot.
According to a media release, police arrived on scene and had an opportunity to speak with the driver in question. Upon speaking with the driver, police learned the driver was failing to abide by a condition of his release.
As the officer attempted to arrest the driver, the accused’s partner interfered and obstructed the officer in making the arrest. The partner then reversed her vehicle in a dangerous manner into the officer. The officer was able to jump out of the way to escape serious injuries.
Additional officers attended the scene and both parties were taken into custody.
Robin Wellstead, 52, from Lucknow has been charged with fail to comply with undertaking.
He has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for March 7 in Goderich.
Shelley Wellstead, 47, from Lucknow has been charged with obstruct peace officer, resist peace officer, dangerous operation and assault peace officer.
She has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for Feb. 14 in Goderich.
