It’s the ‘Big Gobbler Weekend’

One of our most popular meat draws – the turkey draws – will be held this Saturday, with doors opening at 2:30 p.m.

Just in time for your Christmas Dinners, turkey draws will be mixed with the regular meats!

Come early for the best seats – maybe you’ll be at the lucky table. For some reason, at the end of the day, it seems one or two tables may have lots and lots of packages of meat, while the next table may only have one! Price is still the same, just $1 per ticket.

Once again, our condolences go out to member Rick Cassidy on the passing of his father, Gord Cassidy, who is also the brother of another member, Norma Mortimer. Please let the Legion know when a member, or their family, has passed.

Until September of next year, the Canadian War Museum is hosting “Forever Changed, Stories from the Second World War.” Watch the 15 minute virtual opening video at https://www.warmuseum.ca/foreverchanged/#video

Service Records from the Second World War are not yet available online, but you can request a copy through Library and Archives Canada. If the person has been dead more than 20 years, anyone can access the files and proof of death can come from obituary, headstone picture, etc. If the person has been dead less than 20 years (except for those who died during service), only limited information can be released to family members. If the veteran is still alive, you need to have their written permission to release the file. Since Library and Archives Canada gives priority to those who need the documents in order to apply for pension or benefits, you could be waiting literally for years before receiving your veteran file.

With that said, a quicker way would be to submit an Access to Information request online, which will cost $5. This can be done at https://atip-aiprp.tbs-sct.gc.ca/.

You’ll want to request the entire Service file, not the genealogy version. Now, in theory they have 30 days to provide it, but that’s fallen by the wayside during COVID and you’ll likely get the file in about four months, which is better than waiting years!
