Five weeks to go in Walkerton Legion’s Catch the Ace draw

Envelope No. 24 was opened at Sunday’s Catch the Ace draw, revealing an Ace – a black one – but the crowd gave an audible sigh of relief when it turned out to be the Ace of Clubs. The weekly pot of $923 was the reward for Heather Cormier of Mississauga. Half the deck is still sealed in the envelopes, and there are only five weeks left to Catch the Ace. The jackpot will be around $19,500 this week. Tickets are available at the Legion, through members of the Walkerton and District Optimist Club, Kinsmen Club of Walkerton, and at our vendors: Walkerton Foodland, Kaufman’s Your Independent Grocer, Brown’s Guardian Drugs, Holst’s Office Supplies (Walkerton) and Cargill Variety.

There’s a Meat Draw this Saturday at 3 p.m. Bring some toonies and loonies and have a lucky spin, or two, of the wheel. By then we should all know the name of the first winner in the 2022 Early Bird Membership Renewal contest. Three lucky members can win a free membership for the following year. Your Legion membership helps support the hard work that goes on behind the scenes, like funding crucial research and advocating to the government on behalf of Canada’s veterans. Early bird dues are $55, veterans’ dues are $50. Members Jim P. and Wanda W. were both NSI (not signed in) for the member-only Pot O’ Gold and member-of-the-day draws.

Remember to bring your identification and proof of double vaccination when you come to the Legion. The Ontario government now requires that we check those documents, as well as still requiring you to sign in for contact tracing.

At the close of Legion Week, President Rose Austin announced that COVID prevented our usual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner when the Volunteer of the Year Award has traditionally been presented. Then, to my great pleasure and surprise, she proceeded to present me a Certificate of Appreciation and the Branch Service Award. Even my spouse managed to keep it a secret.

Our collective sympathy to member Les Binkley on the passing of his wife Eleanor, who had been a resident of Brucelea Haven for some time.
