TEESWATER – Peter and Jo-Ann Carter are planning an awareness event for the Grey-Bruce and Huron County Alzheimer societies on Saturday, Sept. 25, 1:15-5 p.m. at the Teeswater Town Hall.
“Crokinole for Alzheimer’s” is being held despite the pandemic, thanks to the efforts of a generous community.
Peter said the local health units advised him against going door-to-door for Alzheimer Society donations until people were double vaccinated for COVID-19.
However, renting the town hall is expensive. Fortunately, Amos Albrecht, owner of North Star Carpentry of Elmwood, generously donated a cheque to take care of that cost.
Other regular donors have also provided continuing support.
“The people in Grey, Bruce and Huron counties are the most generous when it comes to charity,” said Peter. “They really do ‘give from the heart’ and the figures prove it.”
The figures to which he refers are the $87,000 he’s raised in 10 walks for Alzheimer’s.
He noted that although many local businesses have struggled during shutdowns, they have continued giving generously. Many have donated door prizes.
The Best Western Hotel in Walkerton donated a one-night stay with breakfast the next morning. There are gift certificates valued at $25 to $50 “which I am sure the players will be excited to win.”
As for players, only 30 paid players will be permitted at the event due to COVID-19 limits. One player is coming from Strathroy, and another from Waterloo. There are also people coming from Goderich, Owen Sound, Wingham, Walkerton, Tara, Cargill, Teeswater, Seaforth, Varna, Mildmay, Hanover and Elmwood.
Admission is $15 and includes a light lunch and cash prizes. COVID-19 protocols will be in place, including masks, contact tracing information, hand sanitizing and double vaccination.
