The flag was down

You likely noticed the flag was down in front of the Walkerton Legion. It’s been a rough few weeks for our members and friends. Our deep condolences go to member Stan Ferguson in the death of his son, Bob, in Texas. Bob had been a long-time associate member. Just a few days ago, well-known veteran Percy Pletsch passed away, shortly after his wife had been admitted to long-term care. And many of us will remember Joanne Gorrie, who also died recently. The widow of a veteran, Joanne was a great supporter of the Legion over the years, although failing sight forced her to give up her membership a few years back.

The Walkerton Legion received the Ontario Command Early Bird Award for 2021, with 67 per cent of our members renewing before the end of November last year. You can help Membership Chair Karolyn Aucoin and the branch get another award this year. There’s still time to renew your membership before the end of November and get in on the final draw for a free membership for the following year. Plus, if you prepay for five years of membership, you’ll receive a free poppy toque, scarf and mittens. It’s $55 a year to support the Walkerton Legion, the work we do in the community and our veterans – that’s less than a cup of coffee per week. Don’t delay, the membership fee goes up by $5 very soon!

Earlier this week, Youth Education Chair Rich Henry and his team selected the winning posters, poems and essays in the Remembrance competitions. Once again, the choice was very tough, but the first-place entries in each category are now on their way to compete at the next level.

LEGION magazine has some great Christmas specials: magazines, wildlife posters, tea and wine sets and lots more. Until this Friday at midnight you can get 15 per cent off orders over $45, plus you’ll be entered in a draw for a pair of Apple Airpods. When your order totals more than $70, you’ll also get free shipping at https://shop.legionmagazine.com/.

This Saturday will be another meat draw day. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. Don’t forget your mask and proof of vaccination status.
