Hike for Hospice in Mildmay raises more than $10,000

MILDMAY – Saugeen Hospice is pleased to announce that over $10,000 was raised through Hike for Hospice held at the Mildmay Lion’s Park on May 1.

“We are incredibly grateful to all those who braved the weather and came out to show their support and hike the 3.6 kilometres through the Town of Mildmay,” said Carl Kuhnke, chair of Saugeen Hospice.

The Hike for Hospice event has been in the planning stages for months by Edythe Oberle, Saugeen Hospice board director.  “It’s taken a great deal of effort, but I’m extremely pleased with the results of today’s fundraising efforts,” said Oberle.

MPP Lisa Thompson and South Bruce Mayor Robert Buckle were on hand to officially start the hike and to deliver encouraging words to all those in attendance.

Staff and family members with In Line Family Chiropractic came out to participate and solicited a number of donations on behalf of Saugeen Hospice. In total, approximately 40 individuals took to the streets and trails to complete their 3.6-kilometre walk.

“We thank all those who committed the time to be at the event and to support Saugeen Hospice,” said Kuhnke. “It wasn’t a very nice day, but the energy and enthusiasm were contagious as we forge ahead to get a hospice built here in south Grey-Bruce.”

Walkers were treated to refreshments and cookies. There was also an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets from the Kinettes for a lovely king-size quilt made by Wilma Sluys of Chepstow. Called “Canadian,” the quilt features squares from all 10 provinces. The draw will be made Sept. 14.
