WINGHAM – Green’s Meat Market on Arthur Street in Wingham has been destroyed by an overnight fire.

Local fire departments got the call around 10 p.m. on June 24 and the fire was still burning at 3:30 a.m. when owner Kevin Green arrived.

Green was visibly shaken at the terrible loss and said, “It’s gone. It’s all gone.”

Along with all of their equipment, there was also around 70 head of cattle hanging, Green said.

A Facebook post early Thursday morning from the business said, “To our valued farmers and customers, we are saddened to share that Green’s Meat Market in Wingham suffered a devastating loss due to fire during the night of June 24th.

Given the extent of the damage, it leaves the building in a condition where we are unable to continue immediate operation. In the coming days, we will be in contact with our farmers to determine the next steps.

We would like to say a huge thank you to our local first responders who worked tirelessly through the night. To the North Huron fire department (both Wingham and Blyth), Teeswater fire department, paramedics, and OPP, we are incredibly grateful.”

Green’s had 25 employees who will be directly affected by this loss.

North Huron Fire Department’s Deputy Chief Chad Kregar told the Wingham Advance Times that an early estimate of the damage is close to $2 million.
